the big pit trip

Event:    School visit to The Big Pit

Place:    The Big Pit National Coal Museum

Date:      08 - 10 - 19

Today was a beautifully sunny but cold day in Blaenavon South Wales and a great days to go 90 meters underground!

Both schools met and soon got out their sketchbooks to start recording the amazing pieces of machinery and original buildings. In groups of 15 pupils with three adults they then descended the 300 feet to explore the coal workings.

They saw the original signalling systems and where the horses were stabled. At one point everyone turned off their lamps and experienced what it would have been like for the young children working down the mines in total blackness. Early times in the mine saw women, children and men all working together with just candles for light on their cloths caps.

The tour guide lead the groups for a 50 minute exploration of the passageways and revealed fact after fact about the incredibly tough working conditions.

A day to remember both above and below at The Big Pit.
